Malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases in the world: more than 600,000 deaths each year, the majority of whom are children in Africa. But today, the response comes from the ground — and it is African.
Game-changing African innovations
- 🦟 Genetically modified mosquitoes — In Tanzania, researchers at the Ifakara Health Institute are working on mosquitoes that can no longer transmit the malaria parasite. These mosquitoes have a shorter lifespan: the parasite simply doesn't have time to develop before the bite.
- 🚁 Surveillance drones — A technology used to identify mosquito breeding areas and organize targeted interventions with local communities. A field-based + technology approach that is transforming the fight against malaria.
Progress threatened by funding cuts
These promising innovations are now threatened by global funding cuts. As healthcare professionals, we know how crucial local clinical research is to protecting African populations.
At AFCRA, we actively support these kinds of initiatives, led in Africa, for Africa, and for the world. The fight against malaria continues—and it needs us.
